We have arrived at that critical moment in history we wondered about, that moment we've been preparing for, that moment we convinced ourselves we had time to prepare for, and/or that moment we convinced ourselves we could somehow avert with good intentions and carrying on.
On Tuesday, Feb 07, "the US Army Corps gave a notice of intent to grant the final easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline to cross the Mni Sose (Missouri River). They are skipping the EIS ordered in December, and skipping the congressional notification period required by law. This is a response to President Trump’s Presidential Memorandum directing the Corps to expedite approval of the project."
This Is The #NoDAPL Last Stand
This is important. It sets precedent for the projects to come. In this instance, the Corps of Engineers is no longer required to provide an Environmental Impact Statement for drilling beneath Lake Oahe for the completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline. DAPL also highlights an ongoing practice of environmental racism and classism, where the valid concerns of one community such as Bismark, ND become disregarded when voiced by another, less enfranchised community, such as the Satnding Rock Souix. We are in an age where the land we live upon is analyzed and evaluated for it's monetary worth based upon the resource constituents. The impact of these enormous industrial projects is not immediately felt by the primary stakeholders, living elsewhere and making decisions in dark cigar dens, conference rooms and board rooms. They are felt by the people who live on the land. This is the policy of "energy independence", making America great again and all that rhetoric. The Keystone XL project has been revitalized; new pipelines are being constructed in Alabama, California, Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois, New Mexico, Virginia...and there are more permits being reviewed.
This is aligned with an official statement from the White House in "An America First Energy Plan":
"The Trump Administration will embrace the shale oil and gas revolution to bring jobs and prosperity to millions of Americans. We must take advantage of the estimated $50 trillion in untapped shale, oil, and natural gas reserves, especially those on federal lands that the American people own."
An America First Energy Plan
NOW IS THE TIME. While we've been wading in our moments of contentment, our ideological sparring, our disenchantment and disconnection, certain insular groups of citizens--politicians and business people--have been putting their noses to the grindstone to advance a particular agenda framed as "energy independence", "reinvigorating traditional values", and so on. NOW IS THE TIME.
It's me. It's you. There's always something we can do.
Divest from large banks funding these projects and move your money to a credit union:
It goes beyond getting in the streets. It's getting up in that business. Opening the windows of transparency where certain special interest groups would choose to work in secret. Because this is our business.
Working hard every day to network, coalesce, co.operate, and continue to implement the future we want to be a part of; one of careful, reverent resource management with a comprehensive understanding of our inextricable link to the deep web of global ecology, prioritization the innovative research in biomimicry engineering, and interconnected communities with rich cultural celebrations.
Why are we building more pipelines, gouging more strip mines, sucking the last groundwater just to pump it back in with hundreds of chemicals to extract natural gas when we have the environmental architecture designs, we have the permaculture designs, we have complete street designs reprioritizing the safety and ease of access for all modes of transportation, we have the model for better, integrated community health already drafted and ready for widespread implementation?
Thanks for your time. I wish you well, see you soon,
