Natives Arrested on Eagle Rock Today! posted by: Alex | 05.27.10 |
This morning 20 squad cars pulled up to arrest everyone at Eagle Rock. Charlotte Loonsfoot and Chris Solsha were arrested and taken presumably to the county jail. The coalition is trying to decide what its next move will be. There has been a call out to all law enforcement to prepare for a riot. There will not be a riot, but many people do plan to reoccupy the site at Eagle Rock at some point in the near future. It is more than likely that we will be organizing a rally at Eagle Rock today.

Please, if you have a moment, call the Michigan State Police post at (906)475-9922 and demand to know why Charlotte Loonsfoot and Chris Solsha were arrested today on federally ceded land up at Eagle Rock. This is all in regards to Kennecott and the proposed Eagle Mine...a sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plains.

ISLAND Hill House Residency Program Announcement! posted by: Alex | 05.20.10 |
ISLAND Announces 2010-2011 Hill House Residency
After five years of planning, ISLAND is proud to announce the Hill House Artist Residency. The Hill House Residency works to support two fields: emerging songwriters and writers at all stages of their career. Residents receive the gift of a two, three or four week stay in a semi-secluded log cabin near East Jordan, Michigan. It includes a well stocked kitchen, a selection of instruments and some basic recording gear. The musician residency also offers performance opportunities and a small stipend to aid in your professional development.
There are two application periods for the 2010/11 residency season. Round 1 applications are due June 1; residencies for this season run June 5, 2010 to October 30, 2010. Round 2 applications are due September 15; residencies for this season run November 1, 2010 to April 30, 2011.
For more information about ISLAND Hill House residencies, including applications, visit www.ARTmeetsEARTH.org
or contact Amanda Kik at amanda@artmeetsearth.org or 231-480-4515.
What is a Residency?
Artists’ residencies (also called artists’ communities, colonies, retreats, workspaces, and studio collectives) provide dedicated time and space for creative work. Beyond this core value, these creative communities are a diverse group, and provide artists of all disciplines with many different styles and models of support.
Residencies can be found in urban or rural areas, serving one artist at a time or fifty. Some support one artistic genre while many are interdisciplinary, welcoming visual artists, writers, composers, choreographers, scholars and other creative individuals. There are programs that are active centers for public programs and others that offer solitude and retreat. Many provide room and board as a home-away-from-home; others offer not a place to live, but a community for local artists in which to work and be supported in the creation of new art.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be juried by a rotating panel selected by ISLAND. Residency awards are merit driven, based primarily on the quality of existing work, using the following criteria, in order of priority:
* the creativity and integrity of the work
* the strength of the artist’s statement and the perceived fit with the Hill House residency
* the availability of the artist in the dates still open for residents
For an excellent overview of artist residency programs, including hints on the application process, visit the Alliance of Artists Communities website.

The first annual Festival of Birds will take place Friday, May 21 at the City Opera House in downtown Traverse City. The interactive event will feature live musical performances by popular acts including Breathe Owl Breathe and Mike Moran, educational wildlife and nature booths, and an opportunity to see some of the area’s most spectacular species of bird up close in person.
Non-profit raptor sanctuary Wings of Wonder will be on hand to present a variety of live birds on stage during the event, including hawks, falcons, owls and vultures. The Empire organization is one of only a handful of sanctuaries in the state dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of injured and/or orphaned raptors. During Breathe Owl Breathe’s first set (yeah! Raptors will be on stage with Breathe Owl Breathe! Crazy!!), a different bird will be brought out at the beginning of each song and have its story told to the audience. Derek Bailey, Chairman of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, will make a special introduction of the Redtail Hawk during the event, accompanied by the Medicine Lodge singers and drummers.
The festival will continue the following day – Saturday, May 22 – with area wildlife and nature events, including regional morning bird walks, native and bird landscape workshops, tours of Wings of Wonder, a Boardman River Nature Center plant sale, bird banding workshops, and tours of Saving Birds Thru Habitat.
