This was a project that came together like magic.
There was no preproduction or rehearsals previous to the recording sessions.
The sessions were recorded live as a band, with very little or no overdubbing.
The ingredients of each session depended on which engineers & musicians were available at the moments notice.
Since all of the musicians have their own gigs with their own bands (the imposters, Mr Jones & the Previous, the Freewheelers, the Wallflowers) or freelancing (like Tree does with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Thelonius Monster …) availablility was often sparce. This led us to a different soup everytime.
I would explain the tune & arrangement to the guys & try some run throughs while the engineers were setting up & getting their sounds together. Then we’d roll the tape. Luckily, we had all been jamming together down at the Kibitz Room for the past couple of years & were used to eachother’s styles & directions. So with all of us in the same room, conducting each tune was a piece of cake & we usually got the take anywhere from the 2nd – 5th try.
What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
Dave Dubow & Signet Sound, Craig Matthews, Ken Felton, Rick Norman & Earl Martin, who all made this recording possible. Also the very wonderful musicians who voluntarily jumped into the studio with us in blind faith and love.
Also Thanks to:
Mom (for friendship & support), Canters’ Kibitz Room, Tortoise Blue (1 of my teachers) & all those people who have ever fed me or bought me dinner.
